Howard Goodkin, MD, PhD

Howard P. Goodkin, MD, PhD is the Shure Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Virginia (UVA). He received his undergraduate medical education at Washington University in St. Louis and his postgraduate medical education at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. He joined the faculty at UVA in 2002.

Dr. Goodkin is a clinician-investigator whose effort is dedicated to both the care of children with neurological disorders and the translational study of seizures and epilepsy. His career has focused on defining the basic mechanisms of status epilepticus (SE), especially on how GABAA receptor trafficking may contribute to the development of established SE, and in assisting the pediatric SE Research Group (pSERG) in better understanding refractory convulsive SE in children.

He currently serves as the first vice-president of the American Epilepsy Society and chairs the ACGME’s Neurology RRC. Other involvements include or have included: membership on NIH study sections, the scientific advisory board for Citizens United in Research (CURE), associate editor of Epilepsy Research, and associate editor of Wyllie’s “The Treatment of Epilepsy: Principles and Practices.”
